The Netherlands is known for its ‘multicultural’ approach to immigrant integration. Some argue that the Dutch are a leading example of a successful multicultural society in the modern-day world. Ever since the Second World War, large waves of immigrants have come to the Netherlands, notably from ex-colonies, Southern Europe, the Middle East, and many other regions. Today, one out of five people living in the Netherlands comes from a different national or ethnic origin. Some argue that these migrants have successfully integrated into Dutch society, and that Dutch people are very welcoming of this rapid change in society. However, major events in Dutch contemporary history have reshaped views on multiculturalism, and the resultant multicultural society is under considerable fire. Here’s why.
