No more flooding-The impact of the 1953 storm
What was the flood and how did it happen?
On January 29th, 1953 there was a north-westerly storm that developed south of Iceland and began to move southwards via Scotland. In the northern section of the North Sea, the wind took a north-north-westerly direction which created a 1,000-kilometre-wide storm field heading straight for the Netherlands. The storm had wind speeds of 10, and struck the Dutch coast on the evening of Saturday, 31 January ("The Flood Of 1953 | Rijkswaterstaat"). |

Facts and figures about the Delta Works
The Delta Plan was formalized in 1958 by an act of the Dutch parliament. The core of the project called for raising of existing dikes (Kruizinga and Lewis).
The Delta Works took almost 50 years to complete. Although it was considered finished in 1997, the official opening did not occur until 2010. In 2010 the last retaining wall was strengthened and raised (Watson, Ian, and Charles).
The construction of the Delta Works created more than 895 square miles of re-claimed land ("Delta Works/ Zuiderzee Works Fact").
